Southbury is in western New Haven County. It was settled in 1787, after having split from Woodbury. It was originally a community built around distilleries and mills and relied heavily on waterpower drawn from the Housatonic and Pomperaug Rivers. It is currently home to around 20,000 residents. In addition to its residential neighborhoods, Southbury has both historic districts and is largely rural, having been a largely rural farming community throughout most of its history.
