In The Now: Contemporary Figurative Art

Opening Reception: Sunday, March 30, 1 to 3 PM

The Crown Gallery at Metro Arts Studios is proud to present In The Now, an exhibition of contemporary figurative art in a variety of 2D and 3D media. Participating artists include Traé Brooks, Faustin Adeniran, and Janice Mauro. This exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of identity, vulnerability, and the figure as a site of both personal and universal expression, reinforcing the idea that this is not only an act of introspection but also a profound statement of resistance and survival. Through the use of contrasting materials and methods, these artists create works that challenge conventional boundaries, inviting a deeper engagement with the physical and emotional aspects of the human experience. In The Now, named for a thought-provoking quote by poet, philosopher, and activist Audre Lorde, whose writing has long been a catalyst for conversations on identity, empowerment, and social justice. “Life is very short and what we have to do must be done in the now.”

The exhibit runs from March 30 to May 10.

Gallery hours: Thursday through Saturday, 12 to 4 PM and by appointment.

Curvilinear: Featured Artist Deborah Loeb Bohren

Opening Reception: Sunday, March 30, 1 to 3 PM

Metro Art Studios is delighted to have an exhibit of the work of Deborah Loeb Bohren as Featured Artist, starting March 30. Curvilinear explores how abstraction in photography can transcend literal representation, offering a deeper, more intuitive experience of form, movement, and space. Lines and curves — fundamental elements in abstract art — shape how we perceive form, movement, and emotion. In Curvilinear, they serve as a bridge between reality and interpretation, distilling the essence of objects and architecture into their purest visual forms. Lines create structure, direction, and rhythm, while curves introduce fluidity, tension, and grace. Together, they transform everyday scenes into dynamic compositions, revealing hidden harmonies and geometric beauty.

The exhibit runs from March 30 to May 10.

Gallery hours: Thursday through Saturday, 12 to 4 PM and by appointment.

Brookfield Film Festival: A Small Town with a Big Film Legacy Brookfield, CT - Brookfield, Connecticut may be a small town, but it holds a meaningful place in the regional film community. Located in Fairfield County within the southern foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, Brookfield is bordered by Candlewood Lake and Lake Lillinonah and sits just 43 miles northeast of New York City. With a population of approximately 17,000, the town has become a welcoming hub for independent filmmakers. Now in its 18th year, the Brookfield Film Festival continues to gain momentum inside the historic Brookfield Theatre for the Arts. Sponsored by the all-volunteer Brookfield Arts Commission, the festival not only celebrates independent film, but also supports arts education. Proceeds benefit the Brookfield Arts Commission Arts Scholarship Award, presented annually to a graduating Brookfield high school senior pursuing a degree in the arts. This year’s two-day festival features four curated program blocks. Regional Indie Afternoon showcases films from Connecticut and neighboring states, followed by filmmaker Q&A discussions. Read-Through Indie Morning, presented with the Brookfield Theatre for the Arts, gives screenwriters the opportunity to hear their work read aloud and network with actors and filmmakers in a collaborative setting, complete with complimentary coffee and pastries. Shorts and to the Point highlights a handpicked selection of Oscar-nominated and award-winning short films, while Music Indie Evening features original music videos from regional artists and filmmakers. The Brookfield Film Festival takes place March 27 through March 29 at the Brookfield Theatre for the Arts, located at 184 Whisconier Road in Brookfield, CT. A $15 suggested donation supports festival programming and scholarships. Light refreshments and festival merchandise will be available throughout the weekend.
