The New Paradigm Theatre Company (NPT) is well-known for its inventive productions that are presented with multi-cultural, multi-generational and multi-gendered casting. It has chosen a community nonprofit that echoes these themes in their summer live production of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" at Black Rock Church in Fairfield.
For each of its productions, the New Paradigm Theatre Company focuses on teaching social justice to youth; to achieve that goal, NPT partners with a nonprofit organization that reflects the theme of the show to raise awareness and to support that organization’s mission and activities. For its August 19 and 20, 2022 productions of Disney's "The Little Mermaid", NPT partners with The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, whose mission is to inspire people of all ages to appreciate and protect the Long Island Sound ecosystem and the global environment through exhibits, conservation, and education.
NPT uses unique ways to highlight the many threats facing the ocean throughout the production of "The Little Mermaid", including the use of recycled, repurposed, and reused trash collected during beach-cleanups, to make some of the costumes and sets for the show.
The partnership between the Maritime Aquarium and NPT provides the opportunity for the organizations to work together on educational and conservation initiatives. It is such a natural collaboration that one of the Aquarium’s resident harbor seals is actually named Ariel in honor of Ariel the mermaid!
